August 5: The Non-Formal Education (NFE) programme of the Education Ministry has been awarded the Honourable Mention of the 2009 UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy for its holistic approach to literacy and its success in reaching remote areas. The Jury welcomed the programme’s emphasis on literacy as an integral part of the country’s “Gross National Happiness”, as well as its focus on adults and out-of-school youth, particularly women and girls. Bharti-Airtel in Bhutan

5 August: International internet connectivity just got more reliable with the launching of the Bharti Airtel-Tashi InfoComm fibre link yesterday. The government and the Indian telecom firm, Bharti Airtel, also signed an agreement to establish a fibre optical cable network till Phuentsholing, and to add a second connection point at Gelephu by 2011. Ferring Group donates US$ 3 million to Royal Textile Academy

August 3: The chairman of the Ferring Group, based in Switzerland donated US$ 3 million to the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan on July 31. The cheque was handed over by the Chairman, Dr Frederik Paulsen to Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck in Switzerland. Her Majesty the Queen mother is currently in Germany for the opening of the Fohr museum. The academy will act as a focal point for both education and a variety of cultural events.
